What is there?

In Flateyri you will find a small shop with basic necessities, a resturant, indoor swimmingpool and outdoor sport facilities. two museums, an old bookshop where you can buy book by weight. The town is located in middle of northern Westfjords area and you can visit others towns within 20-35 min. drive.

What to do and see?

There are great hiking paths, short and long aroundFlateyri. You can rent a kayak, go sea angling for half a day or longer, or go fishing in rivers, take a ride on the famous Icelandic pony, or spend some time on the white sandy beach in the fjord for all kind of sea sport. 


Flateyri in Önundafjordhas been a trading post since 1792 and saw its heyday in the 19th century when it was home to a fleet of decked vessels and the base for shark-hunting and whaling operations. With its fishing industry grinding to a halt, Flateyri, like so many other fishing villages, is visited by tourists in the summer months; the majority of visitors being sea anglers from Europe.

Kayaking is also a popular activity for tourists.The old bookshop has been turned into a museum and coffeshop where the history of the village is displayed. Visitors can also buy second hand books and visit  an old merchant’s home. An international doll museum can also be found in Flateyri.

There is a nice sandy beach on the other side of the fjord, and although the sea might be colder for bathing than most people prefer, the sand is great for building sand castles.

The Westfjords or West Fjords is the name of the large peninsula in northwestern Iceland and an administrative district. It lies on the Denmark Strait, facing the east coast of Greenland.

  • Each part of Westfjords have their uniq charaters.  It is one big wilderness with fishing towns and ocassional farms in between. Northen part of Westfjords are conservation area. Westfjords are rich of wildlife at sea and land. Birds, foxes, seals and whales. The fauna is rich of all kinds of  Medicinal herbs and berries.
